Overpacked: A Unique Package Design for Children's Gifts

Combining Functionality and Creativity

Inspired by the issue of overpacking in China, designer Jiawen Li presents a solution that not only addresses the problem but also adds an element of fun and sustainability to the packaging of children's gifts.

Overpacking has become a serious concern in China, particularly when it comes to gift boxes. Many of these boxes are excessively packaged, far exceeding their actual value. To make matters worse, some merchants attach additional materials to the packaging, driving up the price and contributing to environmental waste.

With the aim of tackling this issue, Jiawen Li has designed a unique packaging solution called "Overpacked." This innovative package design is specifically created for pastries intended as gifts for families with children aged 2 to 3 years old during festive occasions.

The inspiration for Overpacked comes from building blocks, a classic toy that sparks creativity and imagination in children. The surface of the packaging box features playful monster-like facial features, resembling the appearance of building blocks. This design element not only adds visual appeal but also serves a purpose beyond the initial use of the packaging.

What sets Overpacked apart from traditional packaging is its recyclability and transformability. The packaging box can be easily repurposed into building blocks, providing children with an additional toy to play with. The package includes four rectangular cubes, four triangular prisms, and four cubes, all of which can be assembled into various structures, encouraging children to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills.

The dimensions of the Overpacked package are 240mm x 70mm x 240mm. It consists of different-sized blocks, including rectangular cubes measuring 140mm x 70mm x 70mm, triangular prisms measuring 70mm x 70mm x 70mm, and cubes measuring 70mm x 70mm x 70mm.

Not only does Overpacked provide an interactive experience for children, but it also promotes sustainability by reducing waste. Instead of being discarded, the packaging box transforms into a toy that can be enjoyed for a longer period of time.

The Overpacked project began in Xiamen, China in April 2019 and was completed in Chengdu, China in January 2020. Its innovative design and commitment to sustainability have earned it the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This recognition highlights the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, showcasing its contribution to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
